Hot Topics: Sports, Music, and Emergency Workers

It’s Hot Topics time again!  This time we chose topics that we hadn’t covered in a while, including some high interest subjects that your students will love.

yearinsportWe all have been watching our baseball teams train in the spring sunshine and we eagerly await the end of winter and the beginning of baseball season. In a few months, soccer fans around the world will converge in Brazil for the World Cup. This list provides books for sports fans and those curious to find out more about their favorite team, sport, or player.  Ryan shared more sports titles in this post from last fall about baseball and math.

whenthebeatThe great thing about music titles is that they cross so many areas of the curriculum–fine arts, social studies, biography–even science and language arts. Plus, many students are innately interested in music, so these titles are often popular on their own merits. This list includes recent titles about music and musicians featuring biographies, music appreciation, and music history.  In case you missed it, Ann had a great music-related post recently featuring books about The Beatles.

ambulancesinactionEMERGENCY!  We don’t often think about emergency workers unless there is an emergency at home or in the community–and then we are glad they are nearby and ready to roll. This list of titles provides information about first responders–including EMTs and paramedics, fire fighters, and police officers.  Learn about what they do, where they live, and how they are always ready to help anyone who is in trouble!

You can find more high interest nonfiction in this post from Ryan in which he offers some information about struggling readers and shares a few series that just might hook young male readers.
