Are You Afraid?
A few days before Valentine’s Day, I am providing a few horror titles that are coming out this month. This was quite the coincidence, but these books are a good option for those readers that are tired of all the romance that is present in pretty much every other book written for teens. These titles were be sure to give readers their fill of the creepy factor and may have them looking over their shoulder or being afraid of the dark.
The remaining members of the Van Helsing and Stoker bloodlines have created a business of getting rid of all those things that go bump in the night. Micheline can detect auras and with the rest of her crew she finds and exorcises ghosts by capturing their energy on a film roll. On one mission, Micheline and her crew are infected with a soulchain, a curse that will kill them within seven days if they can’t find a way to remove it. There is a small amount of romance in this book with Micheline and one of her crew members, but this plays a minor part compared to the rest of the horror of the book which starts on the first page. This is a strong debut for Courtney Alameda and it will be exciting to see what other creepiness she can conjure up.

After getting in trouble at school Penny is dropped off to spend the summer with her Dad and step-mom, April who are restoring an old house in a remote location in Washington. The Carver House, as the old house is known, has a chilling past and no one from the nearest town willing steps into the woods surrounding the home. As days past and the restoring begins, Penny begins to hear voices, laughter, tapping at her window at night, and swears she is seeing children calling her into the woods. When Penny makes a friend from the local hardware store, Miller, she slowly uncovers Miller’s dark past which is connected to the Carver House. The book starts off slow, but this is just building the setting and letting readers truly get to know Penny, so when she is frightened, you are, as well.
