Book Review: Birding Is My Favorite Video Game
Birding is My Favorite Video Game is a book of one or two-page comics showing nature in all its silly, slimy, gross, funny, scary, beautiful glory. Some of the comics are purely for entertainment value. Some are funny but include a bit of factual information. Some show the danger that the natural world is in and offer tips on how you can take action. Others are purely informational, but in a fun format.
This short and sweet book of comics can easily be read in one or two sittings, but teens will want to go back to reread their favorites and show them to their friends.
The comics do include some potty humor and mention reproductive fluids, as is to be expected in a nature book, so it’s recommended for grades 7 and up. You can visit the author’s website (http://www.birdandmoon.com/) and look through her comics, many of which are included in the book. Some of them might even be appropriate for use in the classroom. Her site also has things such as printable PDF’s of a chart for what to do if you find a baby bird, in both serious and funny versions (http://www.birdandmoon.com/comic/found-a-baby-bird/), which is also included in the book.
This book perfectly straddles the line between fun and learning and will appeal to students (and adults) who are just looking for something light to read, as well as students who are interested in the natural world.
